Kirtan School is heading to San Juan Island!
IN-PERSON (SJI): Saturday, October 17, 2026
What is Kirtan School?
Kirtan School is an inclusive and joyful opportunity to immerse yourself in the field of love, devotion and creative expression, through the practice of kirtan. Kirtan School is designed to help you deepen your chanting practice, no matter your level or ability.
Why Kirtan School?
Kirtan is physical (Body) - we use our voices to sing and our bodies to play instruments, clap our hands and dance. We shift and purify our cells through activating the healing vibrations of these ancient mantras.
Kirtan is emotional (Heart) - we call out to the Divine, expressing our love, our longing, and even our suffering. Repressing our emotions leads to dis-ease. Expression, on the other hand, leads to freedom.
Kirtan is mental (Mind) - the repetition of the mantra replaces the mind’s persistent swirl and helps us find peace and stillness. Some find this an easier, more accessible way to meditate.
Kirtan is spiritual (Spirit) - having a chanting practice simply makes us better people, improves the quality of our lives and uplifts the whole world. It's the best service we can offer. It is Maha Seva (the greatest service).
Kirtan is BLISS.

FAQ
Do I need to have a harmonium?
No, a harmonium is not necessary. You can bring your voice, your hands for clapping, a keyboard, a drum, a guitar…whichever instrument suits your fancy. All instruments are welcome. Although we will provide music and chord charts, our focused instruction will be for harmonium and guitar.
If you are ready to invest in a harmonium, these are the best ones: https://olddelhimusic.com/pages/harmoniums

I’m new to kirtan, is this training for me?
Yes. Kirtan is for everyone! And, in our opinion, the more of us singing kirtan the better! Whether in our homes for our pets, a session out in nature, or facilitating for your community, if you’re being called to sing, lead or share kirtan, then we can’t think of a better way to spend your time than learning mantras, playing music and spending time in a loving and supportive community.
Do I need to be a musician?
Prior musical experience is not required, although a basic understanding of the keyboard, and/or guitar chords is recommended. Harmonium and guitar will be the instruments of focus.
There is no “advanced” Bhakti, for humility is a key component of a devotional practice. We approach every day with a beginner's mind and an open heart. We will meet you right where you are.
